First Annual Scholar’s Colloquium
at Northeastern Baptist College
Sponsored by the Writing Center
Friday, May 4th, 2018
What is the Scholar’s Colloquium?
NEBC’s annual Scholar’s Colloquium is an opportunity for students to be recognized and rewarded for excellence in writing. At this event, the top three papers entered will be presented, and each winning student will receive a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd prize. The purpose of this event is to encourage our writers and to create a forum both for our students to present their work and for others to engage with their writing as they develop the Mind of a Scholar.
How to Enter
During the Fall and Spring of each academic year, students are be able to submit a paper that they feel is especially worthy, well-written, or that they are otherwise proud of to the Writing Center Director. We are accepting papers written during the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 semesters. Professors who receive an especially well-written paper should encourage the student to submit their paper, as well.
How it Works
During the Fall and Spring of each academic year, students are be able to submit papers before the entry deadline.
Three weeks before the end of Spring semester, a committee of three (Director of the Writing Center, and two professors) read through the submitted papers and determine the top three winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place), who receive awards and the honor of reading their paper at the Scholar’s Colloquium, scheduled on the evening of the last day of class (the Friday before finals week).
The awards are: $25 Third Place Gift Certificate, a $50 Second Place Gift Certificate, and a $100 First Place Gift Certificate.
- Can I enter more than one paper?
Yes! You can submit as many papers you have that you feel are excellently written.
- Does my paper have to be a certain length?
Not at this time.
- My friend is shy, but I know they’d win! Can I give you their paper?
No one can submit a paper for another person; it has to be their own choice.
- Can I edit my paper before I enter it?
You can (and should) edit your paper before submitting, especially since your professor likely made some valuable suggestions for edits. You don’t have to submit a paper from last semester as a time capsule. Also, you are welcome to work with the Writing Center on getting your paper in tip-top shape before officially submitting.
- What if I have a paper due in the Spring AFTER the Colloquium entry deadline?
If there are still papers you’ll write after the submission date, don’t worry. You will be able to submit them to the next year’s Scholar’s Colloquium.
- What if I don’t want to read my paper at the Scholar’s Colloquium?
If you are selected to present your paper as one of the finalists at the Scholar’s Colloquium, but are unable/unwilling to attend the paper reading event, your paper will still receive honorable mention but you will forfeit your prize.
